Plymouth Rock

Went with the girls into town for some lunch and unfortunately the Mayflower was out of port for the winter so we missed that. We did get a look at Plymouth rock though. I noticed that as in Italy, the rock was forgotten for nearly 100 years when all of a sudden one of the old timers started telling stories of where the pilgrims had first landed. Could it be that they charged people to have their picture sketched next to it or charged them to chip away a piece of the rock for a keep sake? Hmmmm? Anyway, the rock I'm pointing to is about 1/3 of the 'whole' rock where our forefathers first set foot on this great land. Or so they say...

Boston - Wicked Awesome!

Lisa, Matthew and I visit Bean Town.

We took a trip through the North End and grabbed a piece of pizza for lunch and a fresh cannoli for dessert, made with real ricotta cheese of course. Wicked is truly the best way to describe them, wicked awesome!
After visiting the USS CONSTITUTION we headed for home but not before picking up some more cannoli's for dinner! Mama mia, they are good! You wouldn't beleive how many cannolis Matthew could eat too. Definitely one of his favorite foods.
And it's probably hard to tell from these pictures but notice that I'm wearing a brace on my right hand. Turns out on my first day of school in Newport, while walking to class, I slipped on the ice and fractured my radius. Ouch! Luckily it's a stable fracture and I'm now only wearing a splint at night. It'll sure be nice when I get my full range of motion back in my wrist though. It's still pretty tender. After all, as luck would have it, I am right handed. Murphy's law I guess!

Donadio Coralli E Cammei

On the way to Ercolano our famous tour guide/historian took us to visit the Cameo Factory. Cameo's are becoming a lost art as young people lose interest in this very tedious work. Aldo was pleased to see a young woman there working on a cameo as typically we only see the little charming white haired man with the calloused hands. The young woman was working on a modern piece with a much more trendy design. This will hopefully help to sustain the fine art of cameo making for the future.

Good thing we didn't go antique shopping

Tens of thousand protest in Naples anti-mafia march
More than 100,000 people took to the streets of Naples on Saturday in one of the biggest anti-mafia rallies in recent years. They marched to commemorate the victims of organised crime and demand an end to its stranglehold on southern Italy. Family members of victims led the march, many carrying photos of the deceased. Four mafia groups in Italy are together held responsible for 900 deaths in recent decades. Investigative journalist Roberto Saviano, who wrote the Mafia expose “Gomorrah” and faces a death threat from the Camorra as a result - made a surprise appearance at the protest.

Community of Sant'Antimo

Saint Antimo was a martyre, and this abbey houses a community of Regular Canons. They pray seven times a day. The Abbey of Sant'Antimo is one of the few places in Italy where one can listen to the Gregorian Chant as well as learn to sing it.

Agriturismo Cretaiole

We got a little bit of a late start after being rented our "brand new Mercedes Benz " with less than 30 miles on it. Mama mia! We had a very pleasant drive up to my favorite agriturimo in Tuscany and are preparing for a traditonal Tuscan dinner out with my good friends Stuart and Karine and his parents. More to follow.

My Big Fat Italian Car Crash

Well, word will be getting out soon enough so it's time you hear the whole story. On the morning of Friday the 13th (yeah...it's spooky already)...I asked Dad to drive Taryn to the bus stop at the Parco at the bottom of the hill. He had done this several times on his last visit and seemed to enjoy it. Sooooo...he and Taryn wait for her bus to arrive while parked in our usual spot outside the gate of the Parco. The bus shows up at about 7:10 am and pulls into the Parco, Taryn gets on the bus and Dad proceeds to head home while the other kids are loading on. He looks left, he looks right, he looks left, he looks right again (he's been driving around with me and knows that this requires mad defensive driving skills) so after bobbling his head to and fro for a few seconds he turns the Element to the left, begins to enter his lane and BAM! He's been hit head on by a couple of dumb ass Italian mama's boys going about 50-60 mph in a 20 mph area AND they are not wearing their seat belts. The kids and driver on the bus are all facing the opposite direction so they didn't see the collision. Taryn screams that that is her Grandpa and jumps of the bus with her red cape flowing behind her, blond heroine hair billowing in her blaze as she rushes to pull a rather stunned but uninjured Grandpa out of the Element which had been hit so hard that both air bags had deployed. The two Italian boys stagger out of their crappy little red Fiat Punto which is obviously totaled and the passenger is bleeding profusely from his head...we're talking blood everywhere (I missed actually seeing him in his bloodied and battered state but the trails of blood were still on the ground when I arrived on the scene a couple of minutes later). The bus was going to wait for Taryn to get back on but the children all started screaming and getting upset about the blood so they drove off and went along their merry way.

Some passing Italian's take the two boys to the hospital and it's at least 40 minutes before anybody looking slightly official show up on the scene. Of course there was no shortage of lookie looers. One of which requires at least an oderable mention. Picture this...a big ole fat Italian in a polyester athletic outfit that the elastic has worn out of his pants. He is a grumpy old bugger...and not too sweet on Americana's. He's walking around my poor little crushed Element's front end with a nasty stub of a cigar in his mouth, car fluids flowing freely under his paunch. We are witnessing this from the comfort of Earl's Mercedes that I have driven to the scene. His hind end fills our rear view mirror, Taryn gets the dry heaves, Dad mumbles "Good Lord" and shakes his head...and I'm like "gross" you big WOP (which in this case means "without pants"...literally his pants are hanging virtually past the exit zone "if you know what I mean"...he had so much crack he'd make a plumber blush! Anyway I felt it my duty to get out of the car and let him know that smoking was not advisable at the crash site. He was not happy with me. Butt (ha ha, intentional misspelling) I was concerned that my car might blow up from a gas leak or worse...something oozing from Guido's charming backside decolletage. I still get the shivers!

Soon my appointed military investigator/interpreter shows up and advises me and Dad to play stupid. This of course took no effort at all. We both donned our best "duh" expression and stood to the sidelines. I am sure my caveman Italian skills could have smoothed things over...but I acquiesced and agreed to let Nick work his magic. I was so useless in fact that I was allowed to go home and make Dad and Nick a sandwich and bring them a Coke.

The Italian mama's boys (aged 21 and 28) returned to the scene. The driver had a broken arm and the passenger had 16 stitches in his head. Their mama's were at the site by now and it was just one big Italian love fest...apologies all around...I think...maybe...anyway no one was ticketed or hauled off to jail. Dad is still allowed to gallivant around Europe...no paperwork at the site. The security guard wants his picture taken with me, and the boys drive off with their mama's waving and smiling. Whew! We head to the support site and drop Taryn off at school, fill out a claim with USAA, Nick has already had my Element towed and I'll never see it again. By 2:30 pm Dad and I hop on the tour bus and we're off for a wine tasteing and dinner. Mama Mia! Next week I think I'll buy a Vespa...ha ha ha!

Yep, the only thing missing was the Windex. Our Big Fat Italian Car Crash!!!!

Vino Esperinze!

After the "Big Italian Car Crash" we headed to tenuta Matilde Tasso vini tipicia della Campania for a wine tasteing before heading to a local restuarant for dinner.

Since I was the designated driver Papa indulged in lot's of vino and was introduced traditional to Italian cuisine including...bruschetta, deep fried potatoe rolls stuffed with cheese, eggplant parmesana, sausages and potatoes, pasta with fresh ricotta, wlanuts and saffron, caprese cake and lemoncello! It was a late night as one guest who had just arrived from the states and was quite jet legged drank a couple of bottles of vino to herself and was whoop, whoop, whooping it up quite loudly...video to follow when Earl gets home and shows me how. She left her purse at the restaurant and we ended up having to wait an hour at a further spot for it to be delivered. Dad and I picked Taryn up at 1:00 am from the Support Site Bowling Alley and rushed home to get a little rest before heading off for Tuscany the next morning.

Taryn Letter's in Varsity Basketball

Taryn earned her Varsity Letter in Basketball. She was able to travel with her team to Aviano, Italy and to Ramstein, Germany to compete in the European Championships which required her to miss several days of school. As soon as she returned from Germany it was time for softball try-outs. She caught a virus and had temperatures up to 103 degrees which kept her from school several more days. She managed to make the softball team and was thrilled! Unfortunatly a Monday-Friday 6:30 am -6:30 pm and Saturday scrimages did nothing to help make up her missed work and she was forced to be cut from the team. Academics come first and she had already been diagnosed with acute rotator cuff tendonitis. Perhaps it's for the best but it sure stinks right now!! Next year she plans to skip basketball and focus her heart and soul on softball!!

Where's Jerry? The Cumae Ruins

The Cumae Ruins in Campi Flegrei are literally right down the road from our house. We had a really nice Sunday hike around the area. We'll probably visit again with a picnic. The tomb like tunnel is really a famous sanctuary. It is a grandiose structure excavated in the solid rock for over 130 metres with a number of openings on the side facing the sea to allow for illumination of the interior. The long entrance of tunnel ends in a large and evocative room with a vaulted ceiling: this is the famous Oracle Room, where the Cumaean Sybil gave out her predictions from a high and impressive seat deep in the depths of the the earth which was symbolically liked the the Underworldd, i.e. the next world of the ancients. Hmmmm...a little plagerism here.

Where's Jerry? The Baia Castle

The Baia Castle is near our home here in Monteruceillo. I was told by my favorite tour guide/historian/archeologist Aldo that the items excavated from the ruins in the grotto of our home were on display there. Unfortunatly I could not find anybody that spoke English and my Italian leaves very little to be desired. Most of the museum was being renovated so chances are we would not have been able to view the items anyway. I hope to see them before we leave Italy.

Where's Jerry? Sorrento Penninsula & Positano

Dad and I drove along one of the most magnificent coasts in the world. The Sorrento Penninsula. We stopped for lunch in Positano and feasted on pizza and fresh bread with gorgonzola.

Pizza...Pizza...Pizza

Look out Campana's! We're in the pizza business. We finally got all of our special tools and the right wood and were able to fire up the brick oven. I found an awesome website...read up on the rules and regulations of "true" neopolitan pizza...and away we went. We had so much fun and it all tasted so good! Taryn went for her favorite pepperoni and onion, Earl was anxious to try out an old combination he remembered of cream, proscuitto, and peas...we then whipped out a sweet italian sausage and roasted garlic creation...and I finished up with a recipe I was taught in Ischia last weekend...The Sweet Lorenzo...(it was just called the Lorenzo at his restaurant but I liked it so much I had to add the Sweet part)...a delicious pizza with a cream base, gorgonzola cheese, white onion and rocket (argula). Mmmmmmmmmm!!!
We already have two more pizza parties planned for this month and will probably add more. We've already decided to purchase an oven to take back to the states with us...we love it!
