Photographs of our New Villa

This is what the villa looks like, pretty and PINK, I believe there are eight units. All of the interior photos, courtyard and patio areas are for our exclusive use...we do not share any common areas with the other tenents. Decorating may be a little daunting but we are up for the challenge and looking forward to getting settled. We have an appointment on Friday to sign the lease and negoiate all of the add ons...such as the outdoor grill and pizza oven. We visited the amphitheatre in Pozzuoli on Sunday and when I post the pictures from that outing you'll be able to see the similarity in architecture.

We have a hold on the "museum" villa

We met the landlord this morning with Earl and viewed the house again...tape measure in hand. I don't know what I was worried about...the place is huge and Earl loved, loved, loved it!!! We will meet early in the week to finalize details with an interpreter and Navy housing but it looks like we have a home!!!! When I can get Earl to attach some pictures to the blog you will all be completly blown away! It's beyond anything I could imagine.

We're still too busy to see the sites and dine out much but hey it's only day six and we have a house, Taryn is set for school and the teen center, Earl is already hard a work doing turnover, our express shipment is here, and we are car shopping. Not bad for less than a week eh?

House Hunting....or Villa Finding?

Taryn and I went on our first official housing tour yesterday. We totally lucked out with what seems to be special treatment, angels or something because we have not even attended the mandatory housing briefing...others will be there today as we lounge by the hotel pool...ahhhhh!

Enzo, who has been with housing for years and years was our gracious guide. He had met us only briefly the day before but knew I was looking for something unique in the Pozzuoli area with a view of the ocean, a swimming pool, a pizza oven, wine cellar, local landlord, security system, etc. etc.....you know, just the basics. We saw four homes and they were each amazing and something to talk about in their own right.

I think Enzo may have had us pegged with the very first house. We have an appointment to show it to Earl tomorrow. I need him to look at it with a critical eye and be practical...I was so blown away I just stood with my jaw dropped. It will be up to Earl to bring me back to earth if it won't work...like our furniture won't fit through the door or some other boring detail that I neglected to notice.

The home is in Monteruscello...a suburb of Naples...and has a sweeping view of the ocean (although it was hazy yesterday and hard to see) and the Island of Ischia. We drove up what seemed to be a horse and buggy path...the asphalt was quite worn away and the cobblestones were showing through. Enzo assured me it dates back B.C. and I'm sure it does. We parked outside of a huge gate and waited for the landlord Domenico to greet us and take us up to the house. It appears to be brand new with a twist...it is constructed around a historical site and is protected by the archeological society so the oldest structures cannot be touched with new contruction, paint etc. It is pretty simple in some ways...two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a small indoor kitchen and dining area and a laundry room.... AND THEN...you go back in time AND you get to live there!!!!! There is an large old archway leading to a huge room full of other open archways but you can see all the way around...it's cavelike...ruinlike...Indiana Jones like and simply unbelievable. About 25% of the floorspace at the far left is made of thick glass so you can view the cellar (ah uh hum...aka MONDO wine cellar and them some) which is the same size as the main floor with not quite enough room for me to stand erect comfortably. The whole place made me feel like I was on the brink of a huge discovery...the lost arc or something. I could have never imagined anything like it. We'll see what Earl has to say tomorrow. If for some reason this one does not work out I'll tell you about the other ones...like I said they were all quite something...but this one was magic. It does not have a swimming pool but Enzo said that the owners (three brothers, and one lives on the property) are popular ceramic makers and could easily get me an outdoor pizza oven and create some outdoor kitchen space...this promise I believe. He also said he could get me the two old clawfoot tubs that I want to put on the patio with hot water available to have outdoor tubs to soak in under the stars ...this promise though I will not count on. An American security guard lives below and there is one other American family and a couple of Italian families within the gate. The security system is brand new. Enzo assured me that they were the kind of family that would be taking you to the best restaurants, showing you around, and of course selling you their ceramics at no profit to them...because you would be like a family.

Keep those prayers coming...they are working!!! Don't worry...the first bedroom will be reserved for guests as Taryn fully intends on having a section of the "cave" for her.

Oh boy...life is GOOD!!

Benvenuti a Napoli...Hello Adventure!!!!

It's finally here, my first actual post from Italy. I won't be able to add pictures and things until we get a little more settled.

It is 3:00 am and Earl and I are in the hotel business center filling out required paperwork and studying for our driving exam which will be on todays agenda.

We are staying in a little town called Pinetamare about 20 minutes from the Support Site. We arrived late morning on Sunday and within an hour we had almost been sideswiped and ground into pizza topping while being driven to our hotel. Welcome to Napoli!!!

We are currently in the processing portion of our move so I won't have much to report on the amazing history and site seeing yet...but it will be coming SOON! Yesterday at the big meet and greet I discussed and picked up information on a weekend wine tasting event in Chianti in early September, Oktoberfest in Munich in late September (hmmm), the EuroChocolate festival in Perugia in late October and Midnight Mass at the Vatican on Christmas Eve and that is just a sampling. There are daily local tours as well and I heard husbands talking about their wives who even catch the "rotater" the military flight to Crete on Thursday morning, spend the night and come home on Friday night. I am so freaking excited!!!!!

We found out Earl will be going on travel for three weeks in the not so distant future so it will be imperative for me to figure my way around on the roads, with the locals, and following up with all of our paperwork and moving. August is the big holiday for Italians so househunting is not as easy as other months...hopefully we'll find a home before Earl leaves. Our express shipment arrived here on August 2nd which is amazing so I'll have the essentials that we packed ready and waiting. My Element and our big shipment of household goods will get here sometime in November. We will have to buy a car in the next week so that I'll be able to get around. Our sponser is great but he and his wife just had their 6th child and are a little bit busy...plus there's not much room left in their Suburban for me and Taryn. He took us to meet his wife Latika yesterday and 5 of the 8 strollers parked inside the entrance to the building were his...OMG!!!

Taryn filled out all of her paperwork for the Boys & Girls Club of NSA Naples and can't wait to start school and hit the teen center in the afternoons. There is a Navy shuttle she can take between the support site and Capodichino where Earl will be working and she can hitch a ride home with him after hanging out for a couple of hours. We also heard the school bus system is very good.

I am not enthralled with the feel of the support site asthetically although it provides convenience and access to most things "American" that we may need. We were forced to eat fast food there yesterday and let me tell you how much I enjoyed my Taco Bell Grilled Stuft Burrito with a mayonaisse and pickle relish dressing...barf! Enough said. The site where Earl will be at and where we intend to settle down near lifted my spirits it is "perfect" for me, older, quainter, quieter, better food, great gym, theatre, campus for taking Italian....I can't wait!!!

Well, I better study for that driving test...but honestly what's so hard about driving in Naples? That being said...you all know I love you right?

Having a pint for Uncle Larry

Thought we'd have a pint for Uncle Larry while haunting the streets of Waikiki. The Guinness Pie looked amazing and the live Irish music was much improved after our second Black and Tan. Taryn and Earl shot some darts and we all left content and happy and practicing our Irish brogues.

Only four more days until we leave for Naples!!!!!
